The sixth scientific instrument symposium under the auspices of the Scientific Instrument Commission was held 29 September - 4 October 1986 in Florence and Modena. The symposium was hosted jointly by the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza di Firenze and the Accademia di Scienze Lettere e Arti di Modena.
