SIC Virtual Tour: The History of Science and Technology collection of Yale University’s Peabody Museum, West Haven, Connecticut, USA
January 26, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm UTC
Our host Alexi Baker will share with us a selection of interesting objects from the collection, followed by a Q&A session.
The Yale Peabody Museum has a nationally-important but little-known collection of many interesting and important artifacts. It initially emerged from Professor Derek de Solla Price (1922-1983) working to preserve Yale’s own apparatus from across three centuries. It has grown to encompass more than 10,000 artifacts which represent more than half a millennium of history.
These include artifacts of Yale’s own history, from its first microscope purchased in London in 1734 to cutting-edge apparatus from modern physics – as well as important artifacts from beyond Yale, from an astrolabe made by Georg Hartmann in 1537 to a superb microscopy collection.
