XXXIV Scientific Instrument Symposium

September 7, 2015 @ 9:00 am - September 11, 2015 @ 5:00 pm UTC+0

The SIC is delighted to announce that we have been invited by our colleagues from the Archivio Scientifico e Tecnologico of the University of Turin (ASTUT), Italy, for our symposium in 2015.

Plans are in place for special visits to the noted University collections of physics, anatomy, and criminal anthropology as well as to Turin’s spectacular cinema and automobile museums. If you have never attended a symposium before be assured that the SIC is a very friendly and welcoming group with no formal membership. All are welcome!

For its XXXIV Symposium, the Commission seeks to gather papers offering a variety of perspectives around the theme: INSTRUMENTS IN CONFLICT. We invite submissions of papers that identify and discuss approaches to the study of scientific instruments and their collections which focus on conflicts around the creation, use, interpretation, preservation and study of instruments. These might include conflicting communities of scholars, users and makers, scientific instruments for and in armed conflict, conflicts of space and resources in the treatment of 20th-century instruments, and the possible cross-fire from attempting interdisciplinary perspectives. We would also like to examine the challenges of balancing sometimes conflicting social and political aims in dealing with scientific instruments and scientific heritage. Please note that submissions of proposals for thematic sessions are most welcome.

While we especially seek papers within this broad thematic framework, in keeping with the tradition at SIC symposia, submissions will not be restricted to the theme. Strong papers that generally contribute to the history of scientific instruments, their collections and museums, as well as their broader use within the history of science, technology and medicine, may also be accepted.

Oral presentations will be allowed 20 minutes with additional time for discussion. The conference language is English.

To submit your abstract proposal, please use this Abstract Submission Form which is available here in either PDF or Word Document format. Please submit your completed abstract proposal using email by 15 March 2015 to Mara Fausone at mara.fausone@unito.it. The programme committee will review the proposals and is aiming to notify the applicants by 15 April 2015 20 April 2015 (the deadline for early registration is 30 April 2015 now extended by an extra week to 7 May).
